Architecture as a Growing Landscape

Located halfway up Yangmingshan, Navi Garden was originally a women’s dormitory. Over time, it has been transformed into one of Taipei’s largest private gardens, functioning both as an artist’s workspace and a venue for weddings and public events.

The existing garden was not created as a single, finished design. Instead, it has been gradually cultivated by the owner and gardeners in response to the specific climate, topography, and ecological conditions of Yangmingshan. Through seasonal changes, the garden continuously evolves, forming a living landscape shaped over time—an ongoing process rather than a fixed composition.

Rather than redefining this condition, the project extends its logic of growth. By opening up the ground floor façade, the boundary between interior and exterior is dissolved, allowing the garden to flow into the building. Architecture is no longer conceived as an enclosed object, but as part of the landscape itself. Interior space becomes a constructed terrain shaped by plants, light, and climate.

Programmatically, spaces requiring a higher degree of domestic comfort are positioned on the second floor, forming a volume that appears to float above the garden. In contrast to the immersive condition of the ground level, the upper floor provides distance and perspective—allowing inhabitation to oscillate between immersion and detachment.

In terms of construction, the project adopts a participatory approach, working closely with the owner and gardeners. Those most familiar with the site’s daily maintenance and operation are directly involved in the building process. At the same time, experimental materials and construction methods are tested and adjusted, seeking a balance between innovation and long-term sustainability.

Navi Garden is not conceived as a completed object, but as a field in continuous growth. Architecture here is not a singular act of production, but an evolving project—one that develops alongside its users, its environment, and time itself.
