This project—situated in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and occupying approximately 30 pings—articulates the domestic space as a site of both solitude and collectivity, framed through the lens of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. Designed for a female client whose affinity for collecting art and objects exceeds the logic of storage and display, the house becomes an apparatus for reflection, not representation.
Drawing from the spatial principles of Sir John Soane’s house—where the interior operates as a labyrinth of framed perspectives and calibrated thresholds—the design rejects the neutrality of open-plan living in favor of deliberate compartmentalization. Rooms are not dissolved into one another; they are related. Each space asserts its own autonomy through chromatic distinction, scale, and orientation, yet remains in visual and spatial dialogue with adjacent zones via carefully curated apertures.

The corridor, often reduced to circulation, is here reasserted as a spatial condition in its own right: a space of transition, accumulation, and spatial delay. Inversely, rooms extend beyond their programmatic roles to become containers of affect and thought.
Objects within the home—artworks, collected fragments—do not serve as mere decoration. They are agents that activate the spatial sequence, whose presence negotiates light, movement, and gaze. The house thus becomes a temporal field: one in which memory, perception, and authorship unfold not in isolation but in resonance.
Ultimately, A Room of One’s Own proposes the domestic not as retreat, but as a site of intellectual and spatial sovereignty—where architecture enables, rather than obscures, the possibility of a life lived with intention.
