Yong An Fishing Port

Yongan Fishing Harbor sits quietly along the coast of Xinwu, a place where the rhythms of local life are still present. The market was once the centre of this rhythm—a space shaped by season, tide, and daily exchange. Over time, however, the clarity of its spatial structure has faded. Boundaries have hardened, circulation has fragmented, and the connection between the market and its landscape has become tenuous.
This project does not seek transformation through spectacle. Instead, it begins with small architectural gestures—adjustments that repair, reconnect, and allow the site to speak again.
At the entrance, a simple garden of trees and groundcover softens the transition between road and plaza. A stepped timber platform opens the waterfront edge, offering a place to pause, to look, or simply to sit. The architecture is restrained, almost backgrounded, allowing materials and structure to settle quietly into the landscape.
Inside the market, the layout is made more flexible. Modular stall systems and a revised lighting and signage scheme bring clarity without imposition. Circulation becomes intuitive. Walls are repainted in muted tones drawn from the surrounding coast. The space is no longer only about consumption, but about presence—of staying, gathering, and reinhabiting.
This is a project about re-scaling the everyday. It does not aim to become a landmark, but rather to make the familiar legible again. The future of Yongan Harbor may remain modest, but it can be more continuous, more generous, and more livable.
